RAYA 19

The Afiq M Raya 2019 is a combination of traditional silhouettes and modern elements. As is key in every season the foreground idea spearheading the collection is the easement of movement and being one with the outfit. For Raya this is especially true as we want our clientele to be extremely comfortable wearing our pieces whether it’s to balk kampung or to open houses.
What makes this extremely special this year is our first time working with our own custom prints. As an upcoming brand ourselves, we love it when we can find other talents that we can collaborate with. Having admired her doodling for years, we approached @_doodlemama_ in 2018 to grow our custom print idea.
What came as a source of inspiration for the prints were landscapes and the poetic topographies of the many states of Malaysia. Paddy fields that serves as a backdrop for families that gather in their hometowns, luscious green leaves and trees as well as hills that bring joy in the spirit of Hari Raya. The simplicity of this memory birthed the idea of doing the baju kurung in different types such as kurung Kedah, modern kurung and also kebaya labuh. Draping techniques adapted in delicate ways were added.
We used fabrics like cotton and cotton linen. This again goes back to the idea of basic comfort. Then there is the usage of crepes and muted chiffons in a few of the looks. As for the colour palette, we were drawn to earthy colours that show the abundance of nature like terracotta orange, marigold yellow. Greens in forest and mint.
